How to Find Your Ideal Wedding Photographer: A Guide for Newly Engaged Couples

Your wedding is no ordinary day. It’s a pivotal moment, a new chapter, and a time you’ll want to remember in crystal clear detail.

And because your wedding is no ordinary event, your photographer shouldn’t be either.

But with so many wedding photographers out there, how do you know which one is the perfect fit?

Keep reading to find out how to determine your photography style, what to look for on a photographer’s website, and other essential steps needed to find your ideal match.

Determine Your Photography Style

Are you team “light and airy” or “dark and moody?” Do you prefer a fine art, editorial, or vintage style? Or are you unsure of what you’re looking for but will know when you see it?

Classic, traditional, photojournalistic, trendy…there’s a whole range of photography types! And it’s important to know which one you want for your wedding photographs.

To further help you find your wedding photography style, look at examples online, in magazines, and on social media. Consider the types of images you’re drawn to, and take note of what you like and don’t like about each style.

Take my photos, for example. If you like the weddings I’ve shared on my blog and social media feed, you’re likely leaning toward a clean, classic, and natural-looking style. You want your photos to look timeless and traditional, not trendy and dated.

Research and Review

Another essential step to finding your ideal wedding photographer is researching beyond what the images show you. Ask friends and family for recommendations. If someone you know had a good experience with a wedding photographer, they could provide valuable insights and feedback.

Check out reviews, too. Look for testimonials and ratings on the photographer’s website, social media, and online wedding directories. Pay attention to what previous clients say about their experience, and use your best judgment.

Once you’ve found a few potential photographers, review their portfolios. Look for consistency in style, quality, and creativity. Make sure the photographer has experience capturing weddings similar to yours and can deliver the type of images you want.

And read through their website. You can find nuggets of information (like their approach and values) on About and Experience pages, as well as blog posts that can help you determine if they’re a good fit.

Meet Potential Matches

The last step before booking a photographer is to meet them. Whether a phone call, online conversation, or in-person meeting, you’ll want to know if your potential photographer will meet (and hopefully exceed!) your expectations.

After all, you’ll spend a lot of time with your photographer before and on your wedding day, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with and around them. And it’s essential that they make you feel heard and understood.

That’s why I schedule a discovery call with inquiring couples – to get to know them and vice versa. On the call, you can ask me questions, discuss your wedding details, and let me know what your vision is for your photo experience.

And a discovery call is the perfect way to get to know each other, for you to learn about my process and see if there’s a connection.

Book Your Ideal Wedding Photographer

If you follow the steps above, you’ll feel confident signing on the dotted line. That’s because you took the time to find your photography style, research potential matches, and meet with the most promising photographers.

And in the end, you’ll know you made the right choice. The photographer you choose will have your best interests at heart and deliver a set of wedding photos you’ll love looking back on.

I’d love to be that photographer! Send me a quick note, and let’s set up a time to talk!
