The Villard Houses were built in the 1880s for Henry Villard, president of the Northern Pacific Railway, and designed by McKim, Mead & White as six brownstone houses arranged around a courtyard opening onto Madison Avenue. Where the photographs actually happen

Almost entirely inside the mansion. The marble staircase runs past a wall of circular leaded windows and up into a stair hall with a carved coffered ceiling. Off it sit a series of panelled sitting rooms, a bar and a library, all lamplit and deeply coloured. You can move through four or five distinct backgrounds in a few minutes.

The single most useful thing to know about this venue is that its interiors carry almost no daylight. The public rooms are lit by lamps, sconces and candles, so they look identical at four in the afternoon and ten at night. That sounds like a limitation and is actually freedom: portrait time can go wherever your timeline needs it, and a December wedding is not disadvantaged against a June one. It also means the schedule should be built around the mansion rather than around sunset.

Outdoors, the Madison Avenue courtyard was the mansion’s carriage entrance and is the only private exterior here. The arcade around it gives shade and shelter, so it holds up in most weather, and it is the easiest place to arrange a large wedding party.

It asks that you schedule at least a year ahead, and demand often pushes that closer to two. If you want both, book the cathedral first and fit the hotel around it, never the other way around.
