Choosing your wedding photographer

Happy Wednesday, everybody!  I had a very busy weekend shooting weddings back to back and will have some great photos to post pretty soon.  On a different subject, I am asked quite often some questions on hiring a photographer so I would like to post my answers here and hopefully, it will help brides and grooms in their selection process.

Q: How far in advance should a couple book their wedding photographer?

A: Once you book your venue and thus, set the date, it’s time to look for the photographer.  There are many parameters when finding a photographer, but a good photographer will be booked pretty fast, especially in a season.  Just to give you an idea, I have been already booked for some dates in 2012.  Availability ends fast on long weekends (Memorial, 4th of July, Labor Day, etc) and dates like 11/11/11 or 12/12/12.

Q: Do we really need an engagement session before the wedding?

A: I always highly recommend it.  When you book your wedding package with Julian Ribinik Photography you will receive a complimentary engagement session anyway so I would suggest to use it.  I have written a separate post about it but in any case, it’s a great opportunity to get to know your photographer, and vice versa, as well as get a better sense for his/her style and approach. From my perspective, I always like to have an opportunity during the session to try different things and see what can be done in terms of the best photography options with bride and groom; it give me the ability to loosen up the bride and groom and to make this session a fun project as well as prepare and relax the couple for the wedding day.

Q: Why do my clients hire me (and my team :))?

A: People hire me for various reasons: referrals play a big role in booking my services whether it’s a couple’s friend who used my services or a venue or a wedding planner recommended me.  Ultimately it’s because they fall in love with my photos (often before we’d even meet), and, once we meet, connect on a personal level. They understand that they have found someone not only whose work they love, but who they know they’ll feel comfortable spending the most important day of their lives with.

Q: So what happens if we would like to book your services but we are out of town and will be celebrating our wedding in NYC and need NYC vendors? Or we would like you to come to us to place other than NY state?

A: No problems whatsoever.  I have booked weddings through Skype and FaceTime!  If you have a webcam and a microphone, email me and we will schedule a presentation session where you can meet me “face-to-face”, ask me questions, get a feel for the albums and products I offer and get a feel of my work.
